Google street map is an exciting tool to use with children, as it allows them to navigate around the areas in which they live; recognising familiar buildings or house and possibly discovering new places to go.
The video is a demonstration of how Google maps could be used in schools with children; I have followed the journey that it takes to get from a primary school’s gates down to the local park. The activities that could be developed from this include:
· Thinking about the safety of getting to the park
-How many roads do we have to cross?
-Is there a safe crossing?
-Do we need a safe crossing?
-Can you design a safe crossing?
· Recognising and naming all the roads that we would pass
· Can the children draw a map of the journey
· Can the children think of another route by finding it on the Google street map-will that journey take longer than the original route?
· Is the park close to any other attractions i.e. the local shops- can we plan the route to the shops and then back to school?

Quikmaps is another site that children can access, which allows them to locate specific areas by in-putting a name of a town or postcode. Unlike google street map, quikmaps does not allow you to view the street from a person's perpective, however it is possible to view the area in different four 'syles; including map, terrain, satellite and hybrid. This could be useful to apply in a number of contexts such as geography, maths or science lessons. Quikmaps could be used in a similar way to google maps, however due to it's more abstract nature it may be advisable to use with KS2 children. Other features of this free website include tools to allow you to write or 'scribble' on the map and the use of markers to highlight a particular area e.g. the child's home and school. (Example of a possible work outcome: 'can you work out how far it is in miles from your home to the school?')
